NFL fans now have just a matter of days to wait until Super Bowl LVIII kicks off between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about the event.
Super Bowl LVIII takes place on February 11 and will kick off at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. We recommend looking up what time the game will kick off for your area of the world to ensure you don’t miss a single second.
Super Bowl LVIII is set to grace the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada this year, as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers fight it out to be crowned champions. This is the very first Super Bowl to be held in Nevada, despite there being 57 previous iterations of the event. The Allegiant Stadium is the second most expensive stadium in the world and cost $1.9 billion to build. Around 65,000 fans will pack into the stadium on February 11 to watch the Super Bowl final play out.
In another universe, the Super Bowl LVIII final would be coming to New Orleans this week, but the venue had to be changed. When the league was expanded from 16 games to 17, the Super Bowl final had to be pushed back by one week, which conflicted with Mardi Gras celebrations already organized in New Orleans. Therefore, Nevada stepped in to hold Super Bowl LVIII, while New Orleans will take on hosting duties for Super Bowl LIX instead.
After coming through their respective playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers earned the right to face off in Nevada for Super Bowl LVIII. As the number one seed in the NFC, the 49ers received a bye in the first round of the playoffs, before coming from behind to beat the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round. This set up an NFC Championship Game between the 49ers and the Detroit Lions, with the former winning 34-31. The Chiefs, meanwhile, only went into their AFC playoffs as the number three seed and had to beat the Miami Dolphins in a Wild Card Round to make it into the Divisional Round. They managed to see off the Buffalo Bills 27-24 before beating the top-seed Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.
Many will remember that this is a rematch of the Super Bowl LIV final between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Back in the 2019 season, the Chiefs defeated the 49ers 31-20 with Patrick Mahomes named as the MVP that day. Funnily enough, Bill Vinovich was the referee that day and will take up the duty once more on February 11. That makes him the first NFL referee to ever preside over two Super Bowl finals between the same teams. Super Bowl LVIII will also be the first final in four years to feature a defending champion. The Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 when they last attempted to defend their Super Bowl title. The 49ers could equal the record number of Super Bowl titles (six) with a win on February 11.
At halftime of the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, Usher will take to the Super Bowl stage to headline the halftime show. Over the years, the musical guest has become an important cultural feature of the Super Bowl final, with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Shakira all headlining in recent years. This isn’t the first time that Usher has stepped onto the Super Bowl stage though, as he supported the Black Eyed Peas back in 2011. However, this will be his first time headlining.
The most important thing about the Super Bowl is making sure you can actually watch it! Fortunately, for fans in America, the entire show is being broadcast live by CBS and streamed on Paramount+. There will also be a ‘youth-oriented alternate version’ broadcast on CBS for youngsters, as well as Spanish-speaking coverage via Univision. For radio listeners, Westwood One has you covered.
The Super Bowl will be broadcast on the following:
Ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, the event has been dubbed Swiftie Bowl or the Taylor Swift Bowl by many people online, in reference to the famous pop star. But why? Swift is currently dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, and has been spotted in the stands for multiple NFL games this season. With the power of the Swiftie fanbase behind them, will the Chiefs simply be too powerful to stop?
With Super Bowl LVIII being just days away, there are, of course, a lot of odds on who will lift the trophy in Nevada.
There are currently odds available on all kinds of Super Bowl action, as well as some fun and unique options. What colour will Reba McEntire’s hat be? Will Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift? Will Usher debut a new song during the halftime show?
Excluding overtime, the San Francisco 49ers are currently the bookies’ favourites to win, with Kansas City Chiefs narrowly behind.
